PASCAL DE MAN BIO + CONTACT

Pascal de Man

Biography

Pascal's journey into the realm of technology and human behavior began in his early childhood, driven by an insatiable curiosity about how things function. From dismantling objects to uncover their hidden worlds, to reassembling them in improved forms, he developed a deep fascination for understanding the inner workings of both the physical and human realms. This passion found a perfect outlet when he encountered his first computer, enabling him to merge his analytical mindset with programming.

From that point forward, he delved into the realm of analyzing (re)actions, seeking patterns and optimizing processes using both human and machine interactions. This exploration led him to pursue a study in Advanced Informatics, followed by Interactive Media Design at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. During his time there, he honed his skills in crafting user-centered solutions, blending diverse media and platforms to achieve his objectives.

After completing his studies, Pascal, alongside Olivier and Roeland Otten, co-founded the internet studio Toxit and the innovative Holland-Interactive in 2009. Since then, he has been working as a freelance internet and multimedia programmer based in Rotterdam. Over the years, his expertise has been applied to a wide range of projects, encompassing websites, games, mobile apps, data visualisations, navigation systems, books, video browsers, pattern and profile generators, interactive videos, art installations, and product prototypes.

In addition to his professional work, Pascal embraced a teaching role in 2011. Initially at the Communication and Multimedia Design department of the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences until 2013. There, he imparted his knowledge to first and second-year students, introducing them to the fundamentals of front-end development and prototyping. Starting 2012, he expanded his instructional endeavors to the Graphic Design department of the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. Throughout his teaching experience, Pascal has held various positions as a Coding tutor, guiding students in realizing their interactive projects across web, print, physical space, and beyond.

Pascal de Man's diverse experiences and expertise have shaped him into a dynamic professional who combines a deep understanding of technology with an appreciation for human behavior and creative problem-solving. He continues to make significant contributions to the fields of internet and multimedia programming while nurturing the next generation of innovative minds through his teaching endeavors.

Maritime Museum Rotterdam

Website / 2007

Website for the children's section of the Maritime Museum in Rotterdam. The museum is well known for it's hands-on and playful character, which we tried to resemble online. Most of the practical information is left out (parents look it up on the grown-up site anyway), making room for small games to hype up the kids.

Commissioned by Maritiem Museum Rotterdam /
Together with Olivier Otten and Roeland Otten.

Poetry Compressor

Internet tool / 2006

Poetry Compressor is an internet tool in progress developed by Niels Schrader en Ted van Lieshout for the research project Digital Poetry that was initiated in early 2006 by the Fonds voor de Letteren (Dutch Foundation for Literature) and Waag Society Amsterdam.

Concept and design by Niels Schrader and Ted van Lieshout / Additional programming by Marcel van der Drift.

Rob Stolk

Visual identity / 2006

Visual Identity for Rob Stolk, first class printing company from Amsterdam. Basis for the stationary are randomly generated grids with squares in various sizes for each of the CMYK colors. Overlaying these patterns in their respective colors gives a huge amount of variations.

Together with Niels Schader.

Neisser | Zöller

Website / 2006

Website documenting the work of the German communication and design studio Neisser | Zöller.

Together with Niels Schrader.

Netherlands Architecture fund

Website / 2006

Website for the Netherlands Architecture Fund. It resembles the layout of an application form, where the boxes are proportionally sized to the amount of content they contain.

Commisioned by The Netherlands Architecture Fund /
Together with Roeland Otten.

<ANARCHIV/>

Realtime database / 2006

During the theater conference Na(ar) het Theater on Februari 17 – 19th 2006, a total of 2.421 important words were recorded, supplemented with various types of metadata and stored in an XML database. The gathered input was used to display various colorful dynamic barcode diagrams and animations.

The conference was initiated by the Research Group Art Practice and Development of the Amsterdam University of the Arts.

Concept and design by Niels Schrader and Louise Moana Kolff.
